Early James is the stage name of singer, guitarist and songwriter Frederick James Mullis Jr., born in Troy, Alabama on June 2, 1993 and founder of Early James & the Latest. After receiving his first guitar as a Christmas present at the age of sixteen, he began learning to play it and wrote his first songs, notably inspired by Johnny Cash. He began by opening for his friend's band Fire Mountain, then moved to Birmingham, where he took his pseudonym and formed Early James & the Latest in the early 2010s. During a concert, he was visited by Dan Auerbach, half of the blues rock duo The Black Keys, who signed him in 2019 to his label Easy Eye Sound and produced the first album Singing for My Supper (2020), in which his mix of blues, rock, Americana, folk and country flourishes.
If the Covid-19 pandemic cancels touring plans, Early James gets down to composing his second album, Strange Time to Be Alive, which is released in August 2022, after a series of concerts with The Lone Bellow. Acclaimed on listening platforms, the title "Real Low Down Someone" benefits from the participation of the singer Sierra Ferrell. It is then towards the Honky Chateau studio in Nashville that Early James heads, to record a more intimate album with his bassist Adrian Marmolejo, Medium Raw, which is released in early 2025 and ranks 11th on the blues charts.
