MATSHIDISO (pronounced Mat-sea-dee-so) is a half South African (her name comes from the Sotho tribe, meaning blessing or consolation) half Jamaican musician, born and raised in London.
A multi-disciplinary musician - classically trained pianist, sound artist, composer, arranger, producer, storyteller and singer-songwriter. Inspired by jazz, alternative music, hip-hop, world music and singer-songwriters of the 70′s, Matshidiso's eclectic fusion of styles adds up to a soulful sound that is uniquely hers. With a background in human rights law, Matshidiso’s passion is to use music and creativity to promote human rights and justice-based projects.
Matshidiso's music has influences of early Alice Coltrane and Nina Simone, the storytelling nature of Joni Mitchell, the neo-soul jazz sounds of Robert Glasper all underpinned by the melodic jazz influences of her South African roots and the likes of Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela.
In 2012 Matshidiso released her first EP Nursery Rhymes for Grown Folks taking children’s nursery rhymes and adapting them for adults, it stemmed from a desire to re-create for adults the same familiarity and comfort that nursery rhymes bring to children. She released a second EP in Spring of 2016 Fragile which showcases the vulnerability of an artist and her piano.
Further afield Matshidiso has collaborated with South African filmmakers to create music videos that not only highlight her music, but also seek to present Africa in a more nuanced and complex way. This has included a video shot in Johannesburg entitled Running.
Since her debut release Matshidiso has released 3 singles: Quiet Love, The Water and Running 2025 will see the release of her debut album with intimate performances and single releases serving as tantalising precursors to what is shaping up to be captivating listening experience.
