Seamlessly blending jazz, Afrobeat, and traditional African rhythms, Cameroonian superstar & jazz multi-instrumentalist, Richard Bona, takes to our stage for two exclusive dates this year.
Born and raised in Cameroon, he arrived in New York in the mid-’90s and wowed crowds, with some even dubbing Bona "the second coming of Jaco Pastorius".
Seeking inspiration from his origins, the themes of Bona’s albums address international issues which mirror his desire of using music to take a stance on issues affecting the oppressed.
With a sound that's both classic and unique, he's since been awarded a Grammy-win and 3 nominations with his cross-genre innovation and musical storytelling.

The Jazz Cafe presents
Richard Bona (Matinee)
-
Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Richard Bona was first inspired to play electric bass by the late Jaco Pastorius.
The Cameroon-born artist’s balletically light-stepping runs, lazily grooving ostinatos and rhythmic eruptions are what brings in the jazz fans, but it’s Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean dance music, Afro-beat and African traditional songs gives his music a much broader appeal.
Having played with such diverse artists such as George Benson, Joe Zawinul and Chaka Khan, it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him back to our stage after a seven year absence. -
