SATURDAY SUN are a three piece band from Whitstable in the UK playing acoustic folk and blues music with a hint of country. The country feel comes from Alan Cook’s exceptional pedal steel playing. Whispering Bob Harris when speaking of Alan…..”One of the best in the business”. Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers)…..”I had the honour of working with Alan many times over the years on my U.K. and European tours he is a fine musician and a pleasure to work with”.

Johnny Fewings and Helen Rich share the vocals. Johnny also plays guitar and banjo. Speaking of Johnny’s banjo playing, blues guitar player Geoff Muldaur said.. “Johnny’s soft and easy banjo pickin’ is right up there with the late, great Kate McGarrigle. Calm and steady. Always a joy to play with Mr. Fewings.” Helen plays bass, takes the lead vocal on some songs and provides gorgeous harmony on others. Helen has been a new, and highly significant, addition to the band ‘The band was good before but the addition of Helen Rich has put them into another stratosphere’ - Mark Nicholls, Virgin Marketing

Director Derroll Adams ‘The Banjoman’…lived an extraordinary and colourful life. Born in Portland Oregan in 1925 he moved to Europe in the late 50’s with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott but when Jack went home he stayed, settling finally in Antwerp. His song Portland Town has become a folk singers standard but he is perhaps better known for those that he influenced, such as Donovan, than his own playing. Many cite Derroll as an influence, he knew Woody Guthrie well and his son Arlo both played with him and recorded his music. Bob Dylan fans will know him from his appearance in the 1965 film Don”t Look Back.

A large portion of the set the band will be playing at The Green Note will be a set of Derroll’s music, in between the songs will be recorded spoken word recollections and anecdotes collected from the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Wizz Jones, Happy Traum, Allan Taylor and Ian A Anderson. In addition there will be archive audio clips from Derroll himself. Danny Adams (Derroll’s wife) recently said - ‘’Saturday Sun convey Derroll's music with great honesty and love’. After a recent show, Immy Doman co-owner of The Green Note in Camden Town, commented.. "Saturday Sun put on a compelling show, celebrating the music of banjo legend Derrol Adams. They bring the songs to life with sensitivity, skill and reverence, sharing stories and entertaining context along the way. Highly recommended - an excellent show!" Another was The Maverick Festival where founder and director, Paul Spencer said.. “Saturday Sun celebrate the legacy of THE banjo man, Derroll Adams, with true style, wit and reverence”. Occasionally the band will invite guest artists to join them. Examples have been Canadian singer song writer Cara Luft who joined for several of the Derroll Adams shows and Michele Stodart (The Magic Numbers) who has said.. "Johnny Fewings is an exceptional talent on the banjo. He has a beautiful, gentle, intimate voice. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him over the years”
