The band was formed by bass player Dougie Loudon and drummer Michael Angus in 2018, with the ambition of emulating The Who’s live sound, as displayed on the 1970 ‘Live at Leeds’ album. There was never any intention to be a tribute act per se, but rather to be true to the bands name: to be ‘substitutes’. Taking cuestherefore from
both The Who’s music and imagery, The Substitutes present an authentic, unique and heartfelt interpretation of The Who.
The band has a considerable back catalogue of Who material, including all the classis hits, plus deep cuts and longer pieces, having played ‘Tommy’ in its entirety. Currently the band are in the process of developing their stage show and continue to expand their repertoire, with a view to performing ‘Quadrophenia’ in the Autumn
of 2024.
The four members of the band are all die hard Who fans, 100% committed to the individual part each plays in presenting what has been described as ‘the most powerful tribute to The Who in the UK.’
